Marija Mijic, HR & Office Allrounder craftworks

Could you start by explaining how you landed at craftworks?

Last autumn, I was looking for a job as a software engineer in Vienna. I decided not to look for open job advertisements but to search for a company which fulfills certain criteria like working with an up-to-date tech stack and an innovation driven mindset. As soon as I discovered craftworks I decided to apply as my requirements are perfectly matched here.

What does your typical day at craftworks look like?

Usually I start my work at about 9 AM. After greeting everyone in the office and drinking an espresso, I start to work. At noon, all of us have lunch together in the office, which is really nice. After a coffee, work continues. In the afternoon, we typically play one or two games of tischkick.

Could you describe craftworks in 3 words?

Innovative, goal-orientated, ambitious.

Could you tell us what about your position at craftworks you enjoy the most?

Working with state-of-the-art technologies as well as the interdisciplinary work in the fields of backend and frontend development. I really like the fact that as a developer you are integrated in the whole process of software engineering, even starting from conceptual work, planning and estimation.

Apart from work, what do you do with your time off?

In my free time I enjoy doing sports like football and running as well as reading.

How do you go about continuing to develop your professional skills and knowledge?

For staying on track with current technology trends, blog posts or forums like Reddit are my favored option. Also, meetups offer a great possibility to gain knowledge.

Which book would you recommend reading and why?

From a technical point of view, I would recommend "Algorithms" by Robert Sedgewick as it gives a comprehensive overview about the most important algorithms and data structures that are used today. For those who are interested, excerpts are accessible at https://algs4.cs.princeton.edu/home/

For common literature I recommend reading “1984” by George Orwell as its more and more relevant in these days.

As you did your master thesis at FH Technikum Wien, could you tell us what it was about?

The thesis was about optimization problems in the environment of order picking in warehouses. I designed and implemented a software solution which optimized the distribution of picking orders to multiple order pickers. In addition, the route through the warehouse was optimized for each order picker.

Only 3 short questions left:
