Marija Mijic, HR & Office Allrounder craftworks

What did you do before craftworks?

I did a Masters Degree in Biomedical Engineering at Imperial College London. There I developed recurrent neural networks that simulate processes in the brain.

What prompted you to apply for this job? What about this position interested you the most?

After my studies I applied for jobs in London and wasn’t thinking about coming back to Austria any time soon. But I was nonetheless curious about how the state of Data Science / Machine Learning was evolving in Austria. This is how I discovered the job advertisement from craftworks. It would have been stupid not to apply: A young, motivated team, a diverse range of fascinating projects, and a fancy coffee machine… I mean, come on.

Could you describe craftworks in 3 words?

Innovative, versatile, motivated.

What about your work do you like the most?

As mentioned before, the fact that there’s always lots of different projects to work on is really exciting for me, plus I get to constantly tackle new challenges. Apart from that I really appreciate how much trust and responsibility craftworks puts into their employees. This is definitely the best work environment I could wish for.

Which advice could you give to someone who’s just starting out in your field?

I was actually doing Data Science before I knew the term ‘Data Science’ even existed. Throughout my studies I was using Machine Learning techniques to solve problems in medical research. When the term ‘Data Science’ became fancy, I was like: “Hey, I think that’s kind of what I do”. So who knows, maybe you’re closer to being a Data Scientist than you might expect. I think the most important thing is that you understand mathematics, know how to code, and are truly curious about how things work and interact with each other.

Apart from your work, what do you do with your free time?

After work I enjoy meeting up with friends and sometimes I go to gigs. If I feel lazy I might just watch a tv show. Other than that I love cooking and absolutely need my weekly dose of basketball.

What does your typical day at craftworks look like?

It definitely starts with a double espresso and saying ‘hi’ to everyone in the office. Then I put on my headphones and dive right into tackling exciting data science problems. I do get quite addicted, so when the work day comes to an end I often have to force myself to stop at some point.

Only 3 short questions left:

Mac or PC? Mac.

Office or remote? Definitely office, but I love how flexible you can be.

Which music is playing on your player right now?

My jam: Gil Scott Heron – We almost Lost Detroit
