Marija Mijic, HR & Office Allrounder craftworks

What prompted you to apply for this job? What about this position interested you the most?

I was looking for a change that would line up with my long-term goals. I wanted to get more into the deep technical side of my work and see different tools and projects. craftworks let me do both, and it was a fresh start that fit with my long-term vision. I also checked out the options I had, and craftworks was the best fit from both a personal and professional perspective. After experiences in a large, medium, and small company, I decided that a small company was the right fit for me. I've been working with data for the last 5 years, trying out data science, data analysis, and data engineering. In the end, I found that I enjoyed data engineering the most.

What energizes you at work?

Coffee, fresh air and sunshine. What really energizes me is working on a topic that I'm passionate about and getting into a flow state.

Which craftworks value is most important to you and why?

The craftworks value that resonates with me the most is Lifelong Learning. I'm a strong advocate for self-improvement and growth, both personally and professionally. craftworks provides the opportunity for this kind of development, which also aligns with my personal life values. I'm always striving to optimize the things I do.

What advice would you give someone who’s just starting out in your field?

Explore and experiment with various technologies and fields, because data has a lot to offer. From building models and developing pipelines, to creating or deploying infrastructure, there's a lot to dive into. Try out different things and see what you enjoy doing most. At the same time, remember that everything we do should provide business value, and not just be done for the sake of doing it.

Could you tell us more about your position at craftworks and what you enjoy the most?

I'm a Data Engineer, and my role involves providing data in a refined format. What I enjoy most so far is learning about different technologies I haven't used before, and focusing more on the software engineering aspect.

What difference do you notice compared to your previous employment?

There is a great emphasis on providing value to the customer at craftworks before anything else and I really like this. As craftworks is a smaller company, you pretty much know everyone, which is nice. Oh, and there's also a terrace, which I like. Plus, I appreciate the way people interact with each other.

How do you keep developing your professional skills?

Even in my spare time, I spend a lot of time watching educational videos and reading books on topics I'm interested in. I also write technical articles on my blog and engage with the data engineering community, both locally and internationally.

Could you tell us more about yourself? For example: what are your hobbies and where do you like to spend your time most?

I love sports, regularly playing tennis, running, and hitting the gym. I also enjoy spending time with my friends, especially since they're scattered around the world, I seize every opportunity to spend time with them. I love going for walks and being outdoors. At the same time, I enjoy a nice dinner and don't mind going to events and meeting new people. I really enjoy audiobooks as well.

Who or what has influenced you most when it comes to how you approach your work?

Probably my dad, because he is very thorough and has very high standards and a good work ethic.

What’s one thing you’re learning now, and why is it important to you?

I'm currently learning about best practices and a different stack of technological tools that I haven't used before. This knowledge is helping me to become a more well-rounded data engineer.

Only 3 short questions left:

Coffee or Tea? Coffee.

Tell me one place you always wanted to travel to? Australia.
