Context
Our client is Austria's leading electricity distributor and one of the largest producers of hydropower electricity in Europe. In order to increase the efficiency of hydropower plants, information-based planning and control of the capacity, as well as storage management, is essential. The company was looking for an intuitive software solution that improves the current workflow.
Challenge
To ensure that resources are used as efficiently as possible, the power plants should follow a production plan. A plan manages how much energy should be produced by each power plant at any given time. The company intends to optimize the electricity production of individual power plants according to its coordinated plan using the in-house developed optimization engine to replace the current method.
Assignment
To improve the power production following the mandatory plan, through the customer’s optimization engine, GAMS, and replace the physical method of manually filling out an Excel file. To implement GAMS, a software architecture needed to be built for linking the AKS measurement database with GAMS.

Solution
craftworks developed a multi-component backend consisting of an importer, a pre-processor, a core, and a GAMS-wrapper. We have also created an intuitive frontend for data visualization. The backend components communicate via Kafka, which works as a message broker.
The tool is performing very well and we have been assigned with the task to roll out our solution to several power plants across Austria.
The collaboration with craftworks was open, transparent and professional. craftworks‘ experience in working with industrial applications and complex architectures provided a valuable contribution for the project. In addition, it was important to us to develop a solution which would be easy to use and support our co-workers in their everyday work. We are looking forward to collaborating with craftworks on future projects.
